2019 Diocesan Lenten Appeal

Bishop Edward C. Malesic

Grow in the Lord
a message of faith
from Bishop Edward C. Malesic

As the Lenten season approaches, we are reminded that Jesus rejected the lure of fame, power and wealth when tempted by Satan and instead gave his life in service to others. He asks us to follow his example. Jesus used the parable of the sower and the seed to remind us that we must be good soil so that our faith in him may grow and multiply. Ultimately, we are called to produce good fruit for God by sharing our God-given blessings with others. This year, I am asking you to help our faith community Grow in the Lord through your generous stewardship.

Give to the Appeal

Plant a Seed
by supporting the Office of
Faith, Family and Discipleship

Parish programs that teach our children the faith, get youth and young adults excited about their faith and bring new members into our faith are funded in part by gifts to the Diocesan Lenten Appeal. When we plant the seeds of faith, we provide opportunities for people to develop meaningful relationships with God and we inspire them to be disciples of his son, Jesus Christ.

Help the Light Shine
on parish improvement projects like the one at St. Bernard's in Indiana, Pa.

Last year’s Diocesan Lenten Appeal provided the funds for a major accessibility project. They plan to install solar-powered lights in the parking lot to improve safety and efficiency. In fact, solar-powered LED lights are considered to be "green technology". Since they get their power from the sun, they are 500% more efficient and stand the test of time.

Help the Light Shine

Feed the Spirit
of people outside the walls of your parish by supporting evangelization efforts

Parish Lenten Dinners like the one at Epiphany of Our Lord in Monessen drew in a record crowd last year. Many attendees were people who had never been to church, and some were those who had not been back in decades. While their own “Ultimate Pittsburgh Pierogi” helped to raise funds, their Lenten dinners also helped to raise awareness for the education, spiritual formation and liturgical functions of the parish, supported by the Diocesan Lenten  Appeal. These outreach efforts enable them to proclaim and live the gospel Justice of Jesus Christ.

Feed the Spirit

Support a ministry in bloom
like the ones started by graduates of The Certificate in Pastoral Ministry Program at St. Agnes Parish, North Huntingdon

Your donations to the Diocesan Lenten Appeal provide scholarships for certificate recipiets. They can go on to serve as ecclesial ministers and as ordained permanent deacons or take on leadership responsibilities in parish life including pastoral care, social ministry, youth ministry, catechetics, Catholic schools, and music ministry. Others serve beyond parish settings in hospice care, nursing home and hospital care, campus ministry and retreat centers. They are equipped with the knowledge to take on ministerial responsibilities with theological competence, pastoral sensitivity, and spiritual depth.
